New England Biolabs, Inc. receives a Sustainable Design Award for Building Design

March 31, 2009, (Ipswich, MA) – New England Biolabs, Inc. (NEB) has been awarded a sustainable design award from the Boston Society of Architects for the design of its state-of-the-art laboratory facility.

NEB’s modern 140,000 square foot research and production facility was designed by TRO Jung/Brannen (Boston) with project team members: Moriarty Associates (general contractor, Westwood, MA); AHA Consulting Engineers (M/E/P and fire protection, Lexington MA); Meridian Associates (civil engineers, Beverly, MA) and McNamara/Salvia (structural engineers, Boston). The NEB facility achieved LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmenal Design) in October 2007. This is a distinction based on a suite of environmentally focused standards that include site sustainability, water efficiency, energy conservation and atmospheric protection, choice of building materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, innovation and building design.

Comments from the BSA awards program:
“This beautiful design of a 208,000-square-foot biotech facility in a rural setting incorporates new construction and renovations, which preserved the existing natural setting and historic structures. The new building cascades from three to two stories, following the site’s sloping topography. An urban construction technique was used to save two majestic mature copper beech trees at the site’s center. We were particularly impressed with the on-site sewage digester: a solar aquatic wastewater treatment system in a glass green house that acts as a “living machine.” The project also includes a high-performance curtainwall, a heat-deflecting roof, extensive daylighting, high-efficiency boilers and heat-recovery units, and a man-made wetland that serves both as retention pond and a home to birds and wildlife. An inspiring example of corporate sustainability.”

“One of the founding principles of NEB is a commitment to promoting sound ecological practices and environmental sustainability,” said Jim Ellard, CEO of NEB. “It was our priority to design a state-of-the-art production facility that had minimal impact on the surroundings and the community.”
