New England Biolabs, Journal of Visualized Experiments solicit novel Gibson Assembly applications for open-access video publication contest

CAMBRIDGE, MA and IPSWICH, MA (February 6, 2014) – In partnership with the Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE), New England Biolabs (NEB®) has invited scientists to submit abstracts detailing their unique applications of its Gibson Assembly® reagents, for a chance to win a professionally-produced, open-access video publication from JoVE, the most cited, peer-reviewed, video-based journal.

Gibson Assembly was developed by Dr. Daniel Gibson and his colleagues at the J. Craig Venter Institute and licensed to NEB by Synthetic Genomics®, Inc. (SGI). This technique allows for the successful assembly of multiple DNA fragments, regardless of fragment length or end compatibility. Gibson Assembly was originally introduced in 2009 and has rapidly gained popularity amongst the synthetic biology community, as well as the more general life science community, primarily due to its ease-of-use, robustness and flexibility.

By providing researchers with the opportunity to publish their novel techniques in an open-access format through this video journal, a wider range of scientists will have the chance to learn about Gibson Assembly. Open-access video protocols allow scientists the world over to view and, importantly, easily reproduce the demonstrated technique.

“Video protocols, as compared to the more traditional text-based methods section, are unique in their ability to transform technical content into a more transparent, educational, teach-by-example experience,” said Deana Martin, Director of Marketing Communications at NEB. “At NEB, we are committed to providing valuable, educational content to our customers in a variety of formats, including video. Our collaboration with JoVE supports this philosophy and allows us to highlight the utility of our Gibson Assembly tools and reagents.”

“JoVE uniquely produces and publishes video articles to improve the reproducibility of a publication by capturing the nuances commonly left out in text. Videos can be used to better capture and maintain vital laboratory techniques, while sharing them with colleagues in the field,” said Matthew Kramer, Director of Business Development at JoVE. “Our collaboration with New England Biolabs will draw in unique work from around the globe while, at the same time, filling a vital funding gap in research. This will allow researchers to spend their precious grant funds on continuing their work while sharing vital techniques with the scientific community and accelerating research in the field.”

The Gibson Assembly Cloning Kit and the Gibson Assembly Master Mix are currently available from NEB, as well as NEBuilder®, a Gibson Assembly primer design tool. More information on Gibson Assembly can be found at NEBGibson.com.

Researchers are invited to submit abstracts through February 28th, 2014. One abstract will be chosen by NEB scientists for publication. Additional details on how to submit your abstract can be found at www.jove.com/publish/contest/neb.
