Tips for the Monarch PCR & DNA Cleanup Kit

You may already be using NEB's Monarch® PCR & DNA Cleanup Kit to purify your DNA fragments from enzymatic reactions, but here are a few things you might not know:

  1. It can also be used to clean up oligos
No additional kit needed! With a simple protocol modification, our Monarch kit can be used to clean up oligonucleotides. A small amount of ethanol is added to the sample prior to loading onto the column to help increase the binding efficiency of smaller DNA. Save money, bench space and time by taking this new protocol for a spin!

  2. You can elute in as little as 6 µl
Our unique column design allows for the low-volume elution of highly-concentrated DNA for flexibility in your downstream applications. Our columns are also designed without a frit, which ensures that no buffer contaminants are retained on the column after wash steps.

  3. It can be transformed into a gel extraction kit
The components in the Monarch PCR & DNA Cleanup and Gel Extraction Kits are identical, except for the binding buffer. Simply purchase the Monarch Gel Dissolving Buffer and use it in place of the DNA Binding Buffer (follow the protocol for the Monarch Gel Extraction Kit). It's that simple!

  4. You can buy columns and buffers separately
For your convenience, we have made the kit components available separately. No need to purchase an entire kit!

  5. It is made with significantly less plastic than the leading competitor's kit
Monarch kits have 34% less plastic on average. Also, all of our boxes are made from 100% post-consumer paper, all inks are water- and soy-based, and all components are recyclable. Learn more about how we have designed Monarch kits with sustainability in mind.
